My experience with Netflix streaming has been fraught with ____. Fill in your own
adjective for frustated expectations. A late comer to computers, I am used to failed attempts to implement nifty features which turn out to not be the purported intuitive snap, but rather a rough slog through non-linear AND misleading directions, genre:Haiku credit card agreement. Case in point the ROKU XR.
The first indicator of impending not success, the offer of an upgrade to a service for which I already pay which served no monetary goal of the offeror. Fond thoughts of a baker's dozen(13), possibly garnering goodwill and some customer loyalty to boot. The electrons are just sitting umm, somewhere, no skin off your nose, why not? But wait. This poppyseed roll has a needle in it. Although I followed the directions, success evaded me. I kept coming to a wall where a button was supposed to exist. But the promise had been made. Free to your computer! They didn't lie, they just took away the button. To shorten this, I eventually formed the opinion I wouldn't be getting something for free, and because I'd already wasted some time, I would justify my quest of something for which I really didn't have that much interest by buying the least expensive device which would allow me to watch films of my limited choice 24/7/365. So I ordered the ROKU. I was excited. Movies of my limited choice. For free. Ends up, you need a router. This last from the ROKU directions. Stop the madness.

I've watched several movies since I received it. Its hard for me to get in and out of bed being handicapped. With the Roku I set the channel and I have my Que. I called customer service for setting it up when I first got the unit, they walked me through the set-up step by step. Ten minutes later I had my movies! Thanks again.

The Roku player is a pretty decent streaming device. It is the second on that I tried, the first one did not do what it promised and it was more expensive. This one works good and streams movies from netflixs, and I use my pandora radio on it! My only complaint is that it is sluggish in operating the functions and navigating through the menues. It does play movies and TV shows fine with no problems. Easy to set up and install, and easy to sync channels with the PC. One other thing I do not like is that I can not run it through my sound system I can only go directly to my TV so I do not get my surround sound. I have not tried to contact customer service or tech support so I can not rate these.

I bought this product so that I could dump DirecTV and still watch stuff on my HDTV. Very easy to get up and running. Just entered two codes(one for roku and the other for netflix) & I was on my way. I love this little box. I hope it returns to me many years of use.

I bought the Roku XR over the weekend, and it came on Tuesday. Setup was simple and smooth. I started watching movies and old TV shows with my NetFlix subscription, and was really enjoying it, until it started re-booting now and then. On the second day it stopped working and I realized the wall-wart style power supply had gone bad. I checked Roku's website and emailed tech support to see if I could get a new power supply, and at the same time, bought one for $ 9.99 plus $ 4.95 shipping, in anticipation of poor service. Sure enough, no reply for two days, and then was told to call customer service, they don't do email. Jeez ... isn't it 2010? Even though the new power supply had come by this time, I called to get a spare ... why not. After a long wait and wasted time on the phone, the service rep, who was very confused, told me to FAX in the Amazon order number, etc. I refused, and told her I would email it (as a reply to her email), no one FAXes things anymore. I did that on June 30th, it's now July 22nd and still nothing. Bottom line, great idea, better than cable or satellite for entertainment value, but poor customer support. It's 2010, you shouldn't have to call anyone or FAX anything.
