Samsung BD-P3600 March 18, 2010 James W. Sywilok (Springfield, VA) Setup was straight forward and menu system was seemed more intuitive than my Sony player. I added a 4GB USB drive to system and change the setup to use the external memory. The Netflix streaming is great. You can't tell the difference between streamin and disc in terms of quality. Highly recommend this anyone. You get your bang for the buck.
Way More than a Blu-Ray Player March 18, 2010 Karl Richards (Prairie du Sac, WI) The Samsung BD-3600 is AWESOME. Not only does it play DVDs and Blu-Ray disks just like you'd expect, it also connects to the internet and provides functionality previously only provided by your PC. Equipped with WIFI, the BD-3600 quickly connected to my home network and within minutes, I was watching NetFlix movies online and listening to Pandora Internet Radio. This is the shape of great things to come!
11 Months of trying but still a piece of junk March 16, 2010 Buffalo Brewster (S.F. Bay Area) I purchased this device back in April of 2009, or about 11 months ago, as a supposed upgrade and major impovement to my PS3, primarily because I was looking to have a single unit that could both play my many DVDs, quite a few of which are Blu-Rays, and also to allow me to take advantage of it's ability to connect to online services such as Netflix, and also because of the glowing reviews by another web site, which touted, "Excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies . . . superfast operational speed and disc loading," and they gave it a 4/5 star rating - interestingly, at their site, the overall user experience rating at the time of this writing is just 2.5/5 stars. As it turns out, if I had just wanted access to the online services I would have done much better, for less, by purchasing a separate unit only for that purpose. As a DVD/Blu-ray player, this unit has been nothing but a pain-in-the-ass since day 1. Some DVDs will not even load, including many brand new Blu-Ray discs purchased directly from local retailers or online from Amazon. Some movies will load but never even get to a usable menu or option. It is a rare occasion that I am able to view an entire movie without it getting stuck and having to be fiddled with to be able to continue viewing to the end of the film. Frequently the picture will just freeze and the player will make funny noises like it is trying to remember where it is supposed to be going, and no amount of fiddling will get it to continue. In fact, it gets so messed up that it cannot even eject the disc and has to be turned off then have the eject button pressed without using the power button to turn it back on, if the power button is used first, it will restart still hung up, still making obnoxious noises, and none of the buttons except the power button will have any effect.
I know, some of you may be thinking that I just have a lot of bad DVDs, so pay close attention to what I am about to say. ALL - that means every single disc that I could not watch or had any problem with while using this Samsung BDP 3600 was able to be removed from the Samsung and played perfectly when inserted into the Sony PS3, which I thankfully did not get rid of after purchasing this worthless Samsung unit.
Then there is the so called "superfast operational speed and disc loading" - this device would make slow seem as highly desirable alternative. I thought my PS3 was slow when loading Blu-Ray discs but Samsung has shown that I had no idea what slow loading truly was about. Sometimes, after much garbled spinning noises and several periods of nothing happening, a No Disc message appears on the screen. Most of the time, when the disc does load, there are several long periods of spinning/searching before any useful information appears, and when I am talking about spinning/searching, I am talking about loud, very obnoxious, audible noises coming from the Samsung unit, not my speakers.
Now I purchased this unit when it was a fairly new release, and I have been carefully installing ever BIOS upgrade as they became available, hoping that they knew about and were working on fixing the problems I was experiencing, and each one has resulted in some improvement - I am now able to play some of the discs that previously would not even load, and I have actually had streaks of being able to watch up to 3 movies in a row without the picture freezing, but never 3 Blu-Ray movies - they seem to be the biggest problem for this so called Blu-Ray player to handle.
The bottom line is that I was much better off using my PS3 for watching movies, especially Blu-Rays (still am), and it now has the ability to stream Netflix content by using a DVD provided by Netflix. I work for one of the larger Internet Service providers in the USA, I am very well versed in Network and Internet connectivity, and I also have many years experience using middle to high end multimedia equipment, and I have to say that the Samsung BDP 3600 is possibly the worst purchase of this type I have ever made.
The naysayers are right March 14, 2010 Amazon Customer (Newton, MA United States) We decided to take a chance on this player despite the negative reviews. We're shipping our defective unit back to Amazon tomorrow. After a couple of weeks, the unit could not read whether a disc was loaded or not, it stopped responding to the remote control _and_ the panel controls, and finally froze with a disc in it. CNET has an entire discussion forum devoted to why Samsung BD players are have such poor quality and we learned our lesson.
Buyer Beware March 12, 2010 kidcarbon This unit failed 1 week after the 90 day warranty. It will not recongize Blu-ray disks and will not save network settings (etc). Since it's out of warranty, the labor charge for a repair is $85. If you want to avoid the feeling of being scrwd by a major manufacturer, I highly recomment not buying this product. It DOES have a nice glossy finish though. Gonna go back to my old Sony Blu-ray which has worked reliably for several years.
