Inexpensive but workable. March 16, 2010 L. Mould (Columbus OH USA) It looks nice, and when it plays the picture is great. however it's VERY slow loading and has frozen and restarted on more than 1 movie already. Machine won't accept firmware update. Customer support has yet to return my call. Setup is easy though. 2 wires to plug in, power and hdmi. I had to turn off the hdmi interlink between tv and blu ray, it kept tripping the tv over when I wasn't watching it.
If you are just starting out and looking base level, this may work. rental disks may or may not play!
OK for an entry-level Blu-Ray player March 15, 2010 Seth (New Jersey) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As this is my first Blu-Ray player, I can't compare it to other models, so my only point of reference is HD 1080i Cable TV. I had hoped to achieve better PQ (picture quality) than Cable TV, especially Cable TV's bandwidth-limited over-compression. This affects motion, which creates blurred pixel/mosaic breakup of the picture. The Sylvania Blu-Ray player overcomes this limitation that Cable TV has. I'm less than enchanted by the overall PQ, especially overall contrast/brightness and black levels. The SQ (sound quality) is excellent for Blu-Ray, DVD and CD. I'm only able to listen via optical to my older non-HDMI receiver, Dolby Digital, DTS and PCM only. My setup with the player is with an HDMI cable to a 46" Sony 1080P LCD, KDL-46XBR3. The receiver is an Onkyo TXDS-595, speakers are SLS Silverline Q operated in 4.1 (no center channel) configuration.
This player lacks multi-channel analog outputs, other than the L/R stereo RCA jacks. In retrospect, I would have prefered my ideal choice, the Oppo BD-83SE universal player ($899), or Oppo BD83 ($499) or the Oppo BD80 ($289). But I couldn't wait and save up for an Oppo, so the Sylvania will have to do. Every Blu-ray has played without any problems, all 16 of them in the past 4 weeks. The loadtimes are bog s - l - o - w.
great value March 15, 2010 Charlotte Basel (Parma, OH, US) the sylvania blu-ray disc was a great value and easy to use. set up was not difficult. would recommend it to everyone.
pretty nice for the price March 11, 2010 Stuart E. Pippin II 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Blu-ray players are becoming more reasonable as time goes along. This particular one has been exceptionable so far. Decent price with good features. Something to consider is make sure you also purchase a good quality HDMI cable as well as a optical cable for sound. These do not come with the unit. The HDMI is for picture and the optical goes to your surround sound for digital sound (if you have what I have) I am more than happy with this product. Great price and great quality.
Sylvania NB530SLX Blue Ray Player March 8, 2010 R. Shearer 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Easy to use. A little slow loading the disk, put the picture and sound is great. Can not beat it for the money. No internet interface, but that was not a deal breaker. I will let the interface settle out, otherwise good so far. Of course it has only been a few weeks. Time will tell.
